US Energy Policy Reset in 2021 and beyond
We are at a pivot point for US domestic energy energy policy. With tax credits set to expire, deteriorating infrastructure, and recent deregulation, America must decide whether to rebuild with a 20th century architecture, or reshape its entire energy value chain for the 21st century.
The incoming Biden administration has committed to re-entering the Paris Accord, and setting policy to achieve a 100% clean energy economy and net-zero emissions no later than 2050. There are significant geopolitical implications, with a right wing government in the UK pursuing an ambitious agenda for the COP 26 meeting (late 2021) and another in Australia that has taken a much more ambivalent position. In the midst of all this, China continues to drive towards energy independence, which implies elimination of (eg) coal imports in due course. With this as context, we will discuss the following questions:
